vida e mundo simply means ‘life and the world.’ As a brand that is making strides in reducing its environmental footprint, we are committed to prioritising responsible production and consumption goals as part of our journey to ensure a more sustainable world.
With coffee as our number one product sold across the +320 store network, we set our sights on the biggest single-use packaging item in the business – the takeaway coffee cup and lid. Half a trillion disposable cups are manufactured annually around the world; that is over 70 disposable cups for every person on the planet every year. In a bid to provide conscious consumers with an additional sustainable option alongside our reusable cup, we worked with our supplier on piloting the world’s first-ever one hundred percent biodegradable and compostable paper cups and moulded fibre lids, which were rolled out from November 2019 and are now available both nationwide and internationally in all stores.
As we strive to remain at the forefront of the coffee industry in South Africa in terms of innovation. The paper cups are coated with a lining made from cornstarch as opposed to using a plastic inner-lining making them biodegradable and compostable. The moulded fibre lids are made from natural plant fibres making them biodegradable and compostable. The waste from the paper cups and moulded fibre lids, together with recycled newspaper and other paper waste is used to make the moulded fibre cup carriers resulting in a product that is entirely made from waste material. Both the cup, lid and cup carriers are produced locally by DARTPAC ensuring a low carbon footprint.
Through listening to consumers feedback and continuously developing and improving the cup & lid, DARTPAC is proud to have received a finalist medal, awarded by The Institute of Packaging SA during the 2020 Gold Pack Awards ceremony last month for the sustainable sip lid, coffee cup and cup carrier pack. Part of this award was the Judges’ acknowledgement on sustainability.
“Our sustainability journey is at the top of our business agenda and our new cup and lid is a significant milestone in this long-term journey. We couldn’t be more excited to be first to market with this lid innovation. After months of research and development, we are excited to have launched this initiative which will have a measurable and real impact on our operational carbon footprint. As the world is innovating to change to sustainable products we are determined to be at the forefront of implementing these to ensure continued enjoyment of our coffee for future generations,” said vida e caffè CEO, Darren Levy.
The cups also boast a new, higher quality design for an improved drinking experience. The cups are double-walled, doing away with the need for a sleeve, and call out the coffee size (Solo, Mucho or Grandè) as part of the creative execution.
“Product sustainability and therefore manufacturing processes are critical to a sustainable future. Dartpac, as a South African manufacturer of Compostable Paper Cups, Compostable moulded Fibre Sip Lids and Compostable Moulded Fibre Cup Carriers, is proud to be associated with vida e caffè’s approach to the problem and direction they have chosen in aiding sustainability in a high volume industry,” said Edwin Nicholas, CEO, Dartpac (Pty) Ltd.
